How to Protect Yourself from Heatstroke

It’s summertime! While it’s perfect for beach trips and outdoor adventures, it also poses health risks, particularly heat-related illnesses such as heatstroke. Understanding the early warning signs and taking preventive measures can help you and your family stay safe and enjoy the sunny season.

What is Heatstroke?

Heatstroke is a severe heat-related illness that occurs when the body overheats and is unable to cool itself down effectively. It’s a medical emergency that can lead to serious complications if not treated promptly. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), heatstroke is the most serious heat-related disorder and can result in death if untreated.

Early Warning Signs of Heatstroke

Recognizing the symptoms of heatstroke early is crucial for timely intervention. The Department of Health (DOH) lists the following warning signs:

  • High body temperature of 41°C

  • Altered mental state or behavior: This includes confusion, agitation, slurred speech, or even seizures.

  • Hot, dry skin or profuse sweating

  • Nausea and vomiting

  • Rapid breathing and heart rate: The body struggles to cool itself, increasing heart and respiratory rates.

  • Headache and fatigue

Prevention Tips for Heatstroke

Heatstroke is preventable with proper precautions. Here are some tips:

1. Stay Hydrated

Drink plenty of water throughout the day, even if you don’t feel thirsty. Dehydration is a significant factor in heatstroke. Avoid alcohol and caffeinated drinks, which can dehydrate you further.

2. Dress Appropriately

Wear loose, light-colored clothing made of breathable fabrics like cotton. Hats, sunglasses, and UV-protective clothing can shield you from the harsh sun.

3. Avoid Peak Heat Hours

Limit outdoor activities between 10 AM and 4 PM, when the sun’s rays are the strongest. If you must be outdoors, take frequent breaks in shaded or air-conditioned areas.

4. Use Sunscreen

Apply broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30 to protect your skin from harmful UV rays. Reapply every two hours or after sweating.

5. Monitor Vulnerable Groups

Children, the elderly, and individuals with chronic illnesses are more susceptible to heatstroke. Check on them regularly and ensure they stay cool and hydrated.

What to Do in Case of Heatstroke

If you suspect someone is experiencing heatstroke:

  • Contact emergency services or take the person to hospital immediately.

  • Move the person to a cool, shaded area.

  • Remove excess clothing.

  • Cool them down with whatever methods are available, such as applying cool, wet towels or placing them in a cool bath.

  • Offer sips of water if they are conscious and able to drink.

The Philippine summer may bring intense heat, but by staying informed and prepared, you can minimize the risks of heatstroke. Simple preventive measures, such as staying hydrated and avoiding peak heat hours, can go a long way in keeping you and your loved ones safe.
